Learn about Statelessness in the MENA
Statelessness continues to affect hundreds of thousands of individuals in the MENA region. Various historical factors contribute to the genesis and proliferation of Statelessness in the region. These factors include: (1) formation of new states after the end of colonization, (2) forced migration and displacement, and (3) discrimination based on race, ethnicity, and gender, like the case of conferral of nationality on children, whereby, 12 of the 27 countries in the world that do not grant mothers equal rights as fathers to confer nationality on their children are in the MENA region.
